The city of York is situated on the River Ouse and is a bastion of arts, culture, and history. First established by the ancient Romans, you could spend days exploring York, and I absolutely recommend that you do it if you can. You won’t want to miss out on the plethora of museums, tours, and shops available to you.
But if you’re like me and need to unwind between your city adventures, I have a list of the best York golf courses. Keep reading to find out what my top picks are.
1. Fulford Golf Club
Heslington Ln, Heslington, York YO10 5DY
Green Fees from £100
The Fulford Golf Club offers a course that’s both fair and challenging to play. This course once featured on the PGA European Tour, so you’ll have a chance to walk the same steps of several big names, including the legendary Bernhard Langer.
The 18-hole golf club is located a short distance from York but offers plenty of green and opportunities to see wildlife on the course.
2. York Golf Club
Lords Moor Ln, Strensall, York YO32 5XF
Green Fees from £65
York Golf Club was founded in 1890 and is one of the longest-established clubs in Yorkshire. Designed by J.H. Taylor, a pioneering golfer who won The Open five times, York Golf Club creates an experience that is challenging even for experienced players.
Nevertheless, this pristine 18-hole course will still offer a fair and enjoyable time if you’re an intermediate or just starting out.
After your game of golf, you can head to the club’s lounge and dining area that overlooks the par 71 course.
3. Wetherby Golf Club
Linton Ln, Linton, Wetherby LS22 4JF
Green Fees from £23.00
Wetherby Golf Club is off the beaten path when you think of a York golf course, just under 12 miles from the city of York. Still, if you have a little time to spare for travel, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful course steeped in history.
Founded in 1890, the course is 18 holes set in the Yorkshire countryside, built upon the bones of the former Wetherby racecourse. It’s par 73 and is suitable for players of all skill levels, thanks to five tee options that offer players plenty of flexibility.
4. Pike Hills Golf Club
Green Fees from £15.00
Our list of best golf courses in York just had to include the Pike Hills Golf Club. This York golf course has been operating at its present location since 1946. With 18 holes, you can play through tree-lined fairways with a captivating view of the majestic Askham Nature Reserve.
At 6212 yards with a par 71, the course features various pars to challenge the most skilled players. You might even get a chance to sight some of the local wildlife.
5. The Oaks Golf Club
Long Ln, Aughton, York YO42 4PW
Green Fees from £30.00
The Oaks Golf Club could be described as the best golf course in York by some, with a variety of challenges offered on the course. The yellow and red tees, in particular, are an excellent choice for first-time visitors to The Oaks.
Besides the main course, The Oaks has a 9-hole option, which can be tricky for players despite being short. The clubhouse has options to relax, eat, and drink after a day out on the fairways.
6. Forest Park Golf Club
The Village, Stockton on the Forest, York YO32 9UF
Green Fees from £20.00
The Forest Park Golf Club is another in my list of York golf courses that’s nestled in a scenic setting that will bring you closer to nature as you work off the stress of a long day. You can take your pick of the 18-hole Old Foss Course or the 9-hole West Course.
This course has several challenging hazards providing for a rewarding game, including “Amen Corner”. A flat, parkland-style course, I’ve found it easy to traverse while playing.
7. York Golf Range
Greystones Farm, Towthorpe Lane, York YO32 9ST
Green Fees from £10.00
The York Golf Range is slightly different from your average York golf course. You can spend time at the 9-hole course or practice your swing at the driving range. If that isn’t enough fun, there’s “crazy golf” and “footgolf” to really get your blood pumping.
The 9-hole course comprises four par 4’s and five par 3. This course is great for beginners and juniors but may also be worthwhile for experienced players who want to play a shorter game. In addition, there are 18 coved floodlit bays designed to help visitors perfect their drive.
8. Easingwold Golf Club
Stillington Rd, Easingwold, York YO61 3ET
Green Fees from £25.00
As one of the best golf courses in York, Easingwold Golf Club boasts a stunning 18-hole course set against a dramatic backdrop of woodland. You’ll find yourself spending a few hours on this York golf course, designed by the Hawtree dynasty of golf architects.
Dating back to the 1930s, Easingwold has a par 72 layout that blends woods and heath for a satisfying golfing experience. This course prides itself on its welcoming community and encourages all to enjoy its well-maintained fairways.
9. Selby Golf Club
Green Fees from £30.00
Selby Golf Club, like Wetherby, is not within the boundaries of York itself but is still considered a York golf course nonetheless.
Established in 1907, this club built its course on a base of well-draining sand and boasts a par 71. This makes the course playable throughout the year, so if you’re making the most out of a magical winter experience in York (which I highly recommend!), you’ll still get the chance to use these grounds.
10. Forest of Galtres Golf Club
Green Fees from £20.00
The Forest of Galtres Golf Club gets its name from the forest it resides within, almost two miles north of York Ring Road. A picturesque 18-hole York golf course, you’ll find well-irrigated grounds, with water features and other hazards to keep you on your toes.
If you’ve had your fill of playing on the par 72 greens, you can take advantage of a driving range, shop, and clubhouse with full amenities.
