Callaway Big Bertha B21 Driver Review

Big Bertha! One of the most well-known drivers in all of golf. Why is it called Big Bertha? Well, this is a term that has become synonymous with a large and heavy machine around World War 1. Some people date the phrase further back but is it most notably linked to the idea of a powerhouse weapon or machine. This driver is no exception. Callaway has made various iterations of Big Bertha but the B21 is one of the more recent versions.

What to look for in a Driver

There are many claims about what makes the best driver. However, there are a few main areas to focus on: name is not one of them, otherwise Big Bertha here would be cheating. The areas are distance, forgiveness, swing/feel, and accuracy/control. While there can be other factors, these are the top four when testing or reviewing a driver.

The Facts

With the four categories for drivers noted, it’s time to get into the quick details of the B21. This particular driver was made for golfers who struggle with shots to the right. As such, the driver is skewed to suit those particular golfers needs.

  • Distance: The distance is decent on this driver. Callaway has continued to provide a way to correct the negatives of a slice without giving up distance. A slice can negate a good ball flight. This driver corrects not only the accuracy but also the distance.
  • Forgiveness: Forgiveness is often lost when trying to overcorrect. However, this is not the case with the B21. The forgivability of the driver is within normal range for this style of club.
  • Swing/Feel: The swing of the club is fairly light. However, it is also relatively stable. This is due to the club being designed for golfers who use a substantial portion of the face.
  • Accuracy/Control: Due to the club being made for golfers with a slice, the control is excellent: as it is meant to help straighten the ball flight. This can affect the accuracy of the ball if you end up correcting your natural slice.

Overall

The one negative of this club is it’s made primarily for an amateur golfer with a slice. If that is not your style of play, then this is not the club for you. However, Callaway clubs are extremely well made and attempt to keep up with technology. Even if the B21 is not for you, another version of Big Bertha could be a proper fit. If your style of play fits this club, then this would be a well-chosen option. Big Bertha is meant for power. The B21 seeks to combine the power with control and correction. It appears to succeed. However, all club review should be taken with a thread of testing. The feel may skew to light for your tastes, or it could be even too accurate. There is a happy medium that many drivers try to strive for: B21 is striving for this medium. Not over promising but also ensuring that the club does not under-deliver.
