TaylorMade P790 Irons Review

Is it time to invest in a new set of irons? Are your old ones just not doing it for you? Perhaps you want something that looks stylish but at the same time will help to improve your game? TaylorMade’s P790’s may be the perfect fit.

Who are they aimed at?

Despite looking like the sort of club a pro would wield, and some do, the Taylormade P790 irons are more than suitable for beginners. Whether you’re starting out, are a regular player playing off a high-handicapper or a mid-handicapper looking to get down further, the P790 irons should work for you. Lower handicap players will still feel some benefits, though if you’re off single figures or for those looking to really advance towards a zero handicap, then there’s probably more suitable options available.

Key Features of the TaylorMade P790 Iron

Slimmer than their predecessors, the P790 is perfect for the improving player, as it looks like a top-end club without being too daunting. Similarly, the club face looks somewhat forgiving without being too clunky. The hollow-headed design, which incorporates SpeedFoam inside the club head, allows players to generate more ball speed, as well as providing better acoustics when the ball is struck.

One of the key features of the Taylormade P790 irons is the enlarged sweet spot, which not only  makes these slick irons easy to hit, but allows for a great feel at impact. Ball speed is a big thing too, with the P790 churning out increased speeds, even on those shots that don’t come out perfect. Taylormade put this down to something known as the Speed Pocket, while 31 grams of tungsten help players to hit something like a pure strike even if they toe the ball.

Like some Taylormade drivers, the P790 features high launch, thanks to a redistribution of weight, providing optimised launch conditions. Low spin is a feature too, which promotes longer carry distances, meaning that players will notice themselves hitting the ball further than they did with their previous irons. The low spin can also play a part in slicing/hooking the ball with less severity.

What are people saying?

The general feedback since TaylorMade released the P790 in 2021 has been hugely positive. Golf Monthly, which is undeniably one of the biggest golf magazines on sale right now, rated the P790 at 4.5 out of 5, while those who got their hands on the irons via Amazon provided an average rating of 5/5.

Pros

  • Help players to hit the ball further
  • Stylish model
  • Extra launch, less spin
  • Forgiving without seeming so looks wise

Cons

  • Aesthetics at address may not be ideal for the lower handicap player
  • Perhaps too pricey for the higher handicap player

Final word on the TaylorMade P790 Iron

The guys at TaylorMade have really hit it out of the park, or rather straight down the middle of the fairway with the P790. Featuring increased forgiveness, better launch and greater ball speeds, these gorgeous irons look great, they feel great, and they have something for most players to get excited about, be it a 28 handicapper looking to make quick improvements, or a 12 handicapper looking to get into single figures. Depending on your specification choices, be prepared to pay between £900 and £1200. These beasts aren’t cheap, but you’re unlikely to be disappointed with what they can do for your game, that’s for sure.
