Verdict
The Titleist 917D2 brings with it a lot of surprising changes from the older Titleist golf drivers that we have experience with. The most notable change is perhaps that it is more forgiving – you don’t have to worry a lot about getting a lot of spin on your tee shots if you are a low-spinner. Another new feature is adjustable weighting that the older models were begging for.

What is adjustable weighting?
Adjustable weighting is one of those features that were holding back the older Titleist golf driver models quite a bit. It is a really handy feature that allows you to adjust the driver’s club weighting according to your style and swing. It not only reduces the number of misses but also helps you polish your skills with that specific golf driver more easily.
While TaylorMade and other notable golf driver brands had been using this feature in their golf drivers for over a decade, the older Titleist models were sadly missing this feature and holding their users back. That was a major flaw in the older Titleist designs that has been overcome by the Titleist 917D2 with its high level of forgiveness and adjustable weighting.
The best thing about adjustable weighting is that it helps you square off the face of the club just prior to impact. That can reduce the chances of the ball missing the tee from a wide margin. Most shots made with the face of the club square are straight and much less likely to slice the ball.
Slicing is obviously a nagging problem for most players. You would find yourself down in the bushes very often if you had a golf driver that doesn’t square off the face of the club at address. With a lot of heel and toe misses, the trajectory of the ball gets deviated to the far right or the far left.
With adjustable weighting and a lot of forgiveness, the Titleist 917D2 is one of those models which will certainly not disappoint you in terms of adjustability and flexibility. You can modify its weighting to suit your swing and still offer maximum MOI (moment of inertia).
Does the SureFit CG really work?
The SureFit CG is a modern technology designed to lower the centre of gravity of the club. It is another effort to minimize misses, increase ball speed, and offer maximum MOI on each shot. Modern clubs often come with weights placed deep in their design – mostly at the rear.
It can be a titanium, tungsten, or aluminium weight – usually around 13 to 26 grams. Titleist 917D2 uses a similar technology to make sure that the weight of the club is distributed in a way that supports a higher moment of inertia and higher ball speeds.
We could certainly experience the difference during our shots as the ball speeds were exceptional when the ball hit that sweet spot on the club of the Titleist 917D2. However, there was a minor downside that we experienced – toe and heel misses reduced the ball speed quite a lot even though the trajectory still tended to remain straight.
That might a plus because you don’t want to go looking for the ball down in the bushes due to its high speed even when the shot has sliced the ball and it is a clear miss.
What does it mean to have a highly forgiving driver like the Titleist 917D2?
Increased ball spin is a problem for many golfers because it reduces the distance covered by the ball. Most golfers want an increased yardage with a suitable, low spin. A forgiving driver like the Titleist 917D2 can definitely provide the low spin required for longer shots.
If you are a low spinner, then the Titleist 917D2 can be the most suitable golf driver for you because of its high forgiveness and straighter, longer shots. However, high-spinners might have some difficulty handling it because it drastically reduces the distance on high-spin shots.
The Look and Feel of the Titleist 917D2
The design is quite different from that of its predecessors. Unlike the characteristic Titleist pear-shaped clubs, the club of the Titleist 917D2 is much rounder in shape. The look might appear a bit cluttered compared to other designs. We feel that regarding aesthetics, the design of the Titleist 917D2 is quite a miss.
However, the sound produced by the Titleist 917D2 on impact will certainly please many golfers. It is a very light thud with a metallic or acoustic kind of touch to it.
Does the Titleist 917D2 come with an anti-slicing design?
Most of the time, we felt that the Titleist 917D2 promotes straighter shots and helps you avoid slicing. The SureFit CG works to reduce slicing and promote straighter shots as well. Whether you slice left-to-right or right-to-left, the Titleist 917D2 can definitely improve your game.
It will also help you hone and polish your skills if you are a low-spinner, but we don’t recommend it for high-spinners. Make sure to go through a fitting at the local golf store before finalizing the Titleist 917D2 as a great addition to your bag.
Is the Titleist 917D2 one of the best value drivers available in 2022?
In this price range, the Titleist 917D2 is one of those drivers that offer a lot of forgiveness and flexibility. We really liked the shaft length. The SureFit CG and the adjustable weighting are two premium features that can definitely improve your game, and the looks are not bad either. The sound and feel are definitely one of the best that we have tried.
Should I replace my older Titleist models with the Titleist 917D2?
